Introduction. An issue. Statistics and estimates: historical overview of measurements and studies of victimization, comparison of data within the Republic of Croatia by type of criminal offenses and by territory, and comparison of data with those abroad, dark figure, methodological problems with victimization statistics. Primary and secondary victimization: police and victims, criminal justice and victims. Justification of comparing countries in transition. Who is at risk and why. Who is afraid of crime: citizens' attitudes towards personal safety and punishment. Victim support and assistance: working with victims and helping professions, typical signs of post-traumatic stress disorder in victims of certain crime crimes. Victimization propensity and lifestyle: types of victims. Strategies for working with the police and citizens, potential victims, with the aim of reducing victimization.
The student gains modern knowledge about victims of crime from various aspects. He is introduced to strategies in developed countries that aim to reduce victimization, which is one of the ways to prevent crime. By preparing a seminar on a selected topic, the student is oriented towards searching the literature, presenting and analyzing the topic, and leading (and / or participating in) discussions, all with the aim of assessing the possibility of applying some of the strategies in practice. Also, an assessment is made of the additional knowledge required for individual work with victims.
