Academic degree:

The postgraduate doctoral study Prevention Science and Disability Study was developed at the University of Zagreb Faculty of Education and Rehabilitation Sciences as a result of the project of the doctoral study “Development and Evaluation of Prevention and Rehabilitation Developed in the Community” which was realized within the Programme of the National Foundation of Science, Higher Education, and Technological Development of the Republic of Croatia - Support to the Reform of Higher Education - Establishing Third Cycle Programmes of Doctoral Studies (01/10/2005-30/04/2006) and was based on contemporary scientific insights regarding the promotion of health, prevention of mental and behavioural disorders, risk behavior of children and youth, and relationship and support of the society to persons with disabilities.

The aforementioned study is a kind of successor to the earlier postgraduate studies at the Faculty of Education and Rehabilitation Sciences of the University of Zagreb with the difference that was introduced by the Bologna Declaration - international mobility of students and professors, comparison of academic burden on students, comparison of the quality of studies, and recognition of curricula in other European countries. The study was conceived as an interdisciplinary study which will be taught by professors from various faculties of the University of Zagreb, other universities, institutes, and centres in Croatia and abroad.

The study has been taught since the academic year of 2007/2008, following the approval of the Senate of the University of Zagreb (December 12, 2006), when the first generation of doctoral students was enrolled. The programme of study obtained the license from the Ministry of Science, Education and Sports on September 17, 2009.

The postgraduate doctoral study Prevention Science and Disability Study is organized in two study programmes:

  1. Prevention Science - Prevention of Mental and Behavioural Disorders and Promotion of Mental Health
(Head of Programme: Assoc. Prof. Martina Ferić, PhD),
  2. Study of Disability (Head of Programme: Prof. Rea Fulgosi-Masnjak, PhD)

With regards to the subject modules, the study is organized through three groups of modules:

  • branch module Prevention Science (PZ),
  • branch module Study of Disability (SI),
  • module of methodological and statistic subjects (MSZP)

Some subjects are common for both programmes in their entirety (ZP).

This doctoral study is organized as a full-time study and/or part-time study. The organized teaching is more concentrated in the first years. Already during the first study year the students are given opportunity to address their research interest as early as possible through organized workshops of generic skills and scientific-research methodology, whether by starting the realization of existing scientific projects or by preparing their own research. Students’ Mentors in the writing of the doctoral thesis can be both Croatian and foreign scientists.
