The goal of this course is to teach students basic concepts in bilingual and multilingual research, as well as in second language acquisition.
During this course, students will learn about Croatian as a second language. This includes knowledge about bilingualism, language teaching, factors relevant to language acquisition and the history of Croatian as a second language. In the first part of the course, teaching is focused on Croatian as a second language today, especially from the perspective of the Croatian educational system, currently unprepared for challenges that the future brings. This part of the course will be organised through e-learning. Students will be guided in reading relevant documents (legal documents, scientific work). They will focus their knowledge in on-line discussions. The second part of the course will focus on basic concepts in bilingualism, necessary to understand the specificities of language knowledge of bilingual speakers. The third part of the course will focus on methodological aspects of teaching Croatian as a second language. Students will be encouraged to take a different view into their mother tongue, necessary for teaching Croatian as a second language. Students will listen to lectures. They will be presented with multimedia materials (texts, videos) and will work in groups to extract information from it.
