Description:
Through this course students familiarize themselves with basic knowledge in the field of orderly and impaired motor speech performance, i.e. speech difficulties that arise as a result of damage to the central and/or peripheral nervous system. The emphasis is on developmental and acquired dysarthrias and speech apraxia, as well as language-speech disorders in people with cerebral palsy.

Learning outcomes:
  1. Explain the anatomical-physiological foundations of hearing, voice, speech, feeding and swallowing.
  2. Describe the effects of risk factors for hearing, communication, language, voice, speech, reading, writing, feeding, and swallowing disorders.
  3. Describe complex communication needs in people with intellectual disabilities, people with autism spectrum disorder, and people with motor disorders, sensory disorders, and behavioral disorders.
  4. Explain ethical principles in speech-language pathology work/practice.
  5. Conduct screening in the areas of hearing, communication, language, voice, speech, reading, writing, feeding, and swallowing.
