The course will have lectures and seminars with a main aim to acquaint students with basic knowledge and recent research findings in the area of bilingualism and its relation to language impairments. Seminars should enable students to be actively engaged in recent relevant topics in the field, applying different formats for discussions, debates, reflections reading various scientific and professional papers in the field.
Bilingualism is relevant and challenging topic for many different professions such as teachers, educational specialists, psychologists, paediatricians. It is in particular challenge for speech and language pathologists. research showed that bilingual children with language impairments have similar symptoms in both languages. Research facts lead to many relevant educational issues , especially in bilingual environments that are actually dominant today in EU. Is bilingualism advantage or disadvantage? Does constrain in any way educational process? Is the language processing in bilingual speakers comparative to language processing in children with language impairments? Should children with language impairment to be exposed to another language? This course will enable students to develop deeper understanding of the filed and to be competent in discussions related to this and similar questions, challenges and dilemmas.

Evaluation and grading:
Students are expected to attend and participate in class, in particular during the seminar sessions where group work and active contribution will be supported. During the course there will be one mid term test and final written exam. All the students also have additional option for oral exam, after they pass a written exam.
