Description:
Students will:
Understand fundamental principles and procedures of early intervention for deaf and hard of hearing children
Understand habilitation and educational procedures in clinical work with deaf and hard of hearing children and students
Identify and describe listening, language and speech difficulties of DHH children and students
Create a clinical session plan aimed at working on language, speech and literacy skills of DHH child or student
Develop basic communication and teamwork skills
Course content:
1. Introduction to hearing loss, guidelines in communication with DHH individuals, special provisions in working with DHH children and students
2. Universal neonatal hearing screeening, Early intervention options, Early communication with DHH baby in the family, examples of early communication via manual signs and sign language
3. Introduction to verbotonal method, Stimulation by movement and music stimulation
4. Cochlear implantation: procedure and processor fitting
5. Procedures in early intervention: family based counseling
6. Principles of classical oral approach vs. auditory verbal approach
7. Speech breathing of DHH children
8. DHH children with additional disabilities
9. Manual communication with DHH children, clinical examples
10. Procedures and principles in teaching letter, phoneme associations
11. Reading and writing skills of DHH students; reading strategies
12. Pre-writing skills, clinical overview
13. DHH child in the mainstream classroom, roles of teacher, parents, other students, educational interpreter
Learning outcomes:
  1. Describe the effects of risk factors for hearing, communication, language, voice, speech, reading, writing, feeding, and swallowing disorders.
  2. Explain the principles of early intervention.
  3. Implement a plan to foster hearing, communication and language development and literacy as an assistant in the family environment and educational institutions for persons who have undergone speech therapy assessment.
  4. Develop basic communication skills, collaboration and teamwork.
  5. Explain the characteristics of the teaching process in teaching children with difficulties in hearing, communication, language, speech, reading, writing and arithmetic.
