Student Support and Career Development Center (CARPO)

The Student Support and Career Development Center (CARPO) is an organizational unit at the University of Zagreb Faculty of Education and Rehabilitation Sciences.

CARPO offers services in three areas: career management skills, mental health care, and academic skills.

Within each of these areas, we organize lectures, workshops, individual and group counseling, round tables, and similar activities. In addition, we place special emphasis on helping first-year students adjust to university life. Every year, we organize a Q&A workshop where senior students introduce freshmen to all the “charms” of student life, from academic challenges to building social networks, getting to know the city, and more. We also run mentoring programs in which senior students (mentors) spend one semester socializing with freshmen and providing additional support during their adjustment period.

In the area of mental health care, students are offered free counseling/psychotherapy services provided, under supervision, by trainees from various psychotherapy schools.

In addition to the activities mentioned above, this academic year we introduced fun social activities such as a Book Club, movie nights at ERF, picnics, and other events.

Besides meeting and socializing at our Faculty (and occasionally at other locations), we also stay connected with students online through Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/carpo.erf), the Center’s website (currently under development), and via email at carpo@erf.unizg.hr.

In short, we have worked hard to develop a wide range of services to respond to the diverse needs of our students.

Therefore, dear students, feel free to contact us with confidence! We are here because of you and for you!

Course: “Peer Support for Students with Disabilities”

The University of Zagreb provides peer support for students with disabilities within the university elective course Peer Support for Students with Disabilities. The course educates peers to provide quality support to fellow students with disabilities in carrying out everyday academic activities, such as:

assistance with arriving at the faculty and navigating campus spaces,

support in lecture halls, offices, libraries, and student services,

assistance with administrative procedures,

help with note-taking during lectures,

support during practical exercises,

verbal descriptions of visual materials,

explaining concepts,

collaborative academic work,

reviewing written assignments,

support in stressful situations,

mediation in communication and social situations,

personal assistance when needed (e.g., going to the cafeteria or restroom).

Learning outcomes of the course:

maintain quality social relationships in the context of peer support,

examine the social context and their own attitudes/values toward people with disabilities,

recognize ethical challenges in providing peer support,

explain the applicability of social policy in direct work with people with disabilities,

create work plans for providing peer support,

provide peer support to students with disabilities in an academic environment.

The course is available to all students from all university faculties and academies, and at all levels of study (undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate), every semester (winter and summer), through three models:

Model A – Preparatory Workshop and Peer Support
5 ECTS credits: 2 ECTS credits for the preparatory workshop/training + 3 ECTS credits for providing peer support during one semester (completion is graded as “pass”; student work is not numerically graded.)

Model B – Peer Support
3 ECTS credits: Providing peer support during one semester (prerequisite: previously completed Model A or C. Completion is graded as “pass”; student work is not numerically graded.)

Model C – Preparatory Workshop
2 ECTS credits: Preparatory workshop/training (student competencies are assessed through participation and an oral exam and are graded.)

Manuals on Adapting Academic Activities to the Needs of Students with Disabilities

As part of the Tempus project “Education for Equal Opportunities at Croatian Universities – EduQuality”, the following manuals were developed:

General Guidelines

Physical Accessibility

Access to Information and Services

Teaching and Learning Outcomes

Mentoring and Consultations

International Student Mobility

Leisure Time

Students’ Psychosocial Needs

Students from Vulnerable and Underrepresented Groups

The University of Zagreb Faculty of Education and Rehabilitation Sciences recognizes the importance of improving study conditions for students from vulnerable and underrepresented groups and has therefore been working for many years to create an inclusive academic environment and student support system, particularly for students with disabilities.

Today, support for all our students, with special emphasis on those in disadvantaged positions, is provided through the activities of the Faculty’s special organizational unit dedicated to strengthening academic competencies, career management skills, mental health, and student well-being — the Student Support and Career Development Center (CARPO).

In the coming period, we are committed to further strengthening the social dimension of higher education and promoting equality, inclusion, and fairness even more strongly. We will continue to monitor the needs of all our students and respond promptly, while also developing specific regulations and procedures aligned with the needs of underrepresented and vulnerable student groups that may newly emerge in society or through future challenges.

We will place inclusion at the center of everything we do by embedding equality and diversity into our organizational structures, processes, and procedures, and by ensuring that we “live” our values in practice.

Bearing in mind that inclusive education is not an outcome but a process, we will continuously review and reconsider it, actively addressing new issues and challenges. A key element in creating inclusive education will also be direct cooperation with students from vulnerable and underrepresented groups, ensuring that all measures are co-created and aligned as closely as possible with students’ real needs.
